Think I Figured Out My Rough Idle Problem

After a busy month I finally got a chance to work on the truck a bit this morning. As I’m removing the IAC valve to clean it, it starts to twist at a steeper angle than should be physically possible given that it’s still mostly in the hole. And then the main part of it completely separates from the threaded portion.

If you look closely you can see the silvery ring around the hole where the operational part of the valve sticks  out; that’s where it sheared off from the part still in the hole.

The rest of the valve

I’m hoping that cracks in the IAC valve were the cause of the rough idle. That and the gasket:

After a run to the hardware store and parts store, I’ve got a replacement and a huge EZ-out for getting the other part of the valve out. I’m about to go out and give it a shot. Wish me luck!

Wow! Hopefully that comes apart easily. Should work better...

Yeah, it came right out once I banged the EZ-out in. Seems much better now; the needle barely trembles.  Not 100% steady, but that seems like a high bar for this old a truck. Getting emissions tested on Tuesday so we’ll see if that discovers anything.
